Timeshift v16.10.5

Timeshift v16.10.5.mdTimeshift v16.10.5 is now available. Changes are summarized below.

What’s New

  • Support for Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) and derivatives (like Mint 17.x) - The Gnome/GTK stack and system utilities on trusty are pretty outdated. The new Timeshift version would not install on trusty or exit with an error if installed. This has been fixed in v16.10.5. Workarounds have been added to make it work with older versions of util-linux and GTK. Builds for trusty are now available in the PPA.
  • Support for BTRFS systems with @ and @home on separate partitions - This setup is now supported. Previous versions would quit with a “not supported” message.
  • Space savings with snapshots of multiple systems on same device - Previous versions of Timeshift linked to the last snapshot in time when creating snapshots. If the snapshot device contained snapshots from multiple systems and if the last snapshot was from a different system, then it would waste disk space as most files would get duplicated. Timeshift will now check the system UUID and link from the last snapshot of the same system while creating snapshots.
  • The About > Credits window now lists the names of people who have donated $10 or more towards this project. Thanks to all the people who have donated. Please let me know in case you have donated but your name is not listed.

Timeshift v16.11.md

Timeshift v16.11 is now available. Changes are summarized below.

What’s New

  • The console interface and GTK interface have been split into separate utilities: timeshift and timeshift-gtk

  • Console:

    • Progress will be displayed in terminal while creating and deleting snapshots
    • Added --comments option for setting the comment when new snapshot is created
    • Input timeout interval was increased to 60 seconds
    • Default grub device will be suggested when prompting user
    • User can press ENTER to accept the default choice for all prompts
  • Restore Window:
    • Removed loop devices from target device dropdowns
    • Fixed some issues in the default device selection logic. Comboboxes would remain unselected in some scenarios
    • User will be prompted to unlock default devices before the restore window is displayed
    • LVM volume names will be displayed on the target device selection tab
    • Added separate options to reinstall GRUB, update initramfs and update GRUB menu
    • Fixed: Progressbar will display the progress when restoring another system in GUI mode
    • Added a right-click menu option to view log files for restore
    • Exclude Apps: Items will be populated from destination home directories as well as snapshot’s home directories.
  • Restore:
    • Bind /dev/pts when chrooting the restored system
    • Check and repair file systems after offline restore
  • Settings Window:
    • Replaced Include and Exclude tabs with a single tab for Filters. Added option to enter a custom pattern. Patterns in list can now be edited directly and rearranged by dragging with mouse.
    • Resized the window size to match Main Window
    • Added borders around statusbar
  • Fedora/RedHat: Fixed detection of Live USB mode on the Live system

  • /var/spool and ~/.dbus will be excluded while creating snapshots. /etc/timeshift.json will also be excluded so that it is not replaced with an older file when a snapshot is restored.

  • Fixed the handling of spaces in device labels and mount paths. Any space in the device label would result in the files getting written to the root device instead of the snapshot device.

Timeshift v17.1.md

A major update for Timeshift is now available (v17.1). Changes are summarized below.

What's New

BTRFS Snapshots

Features of Timeshift BTRFS have been merged with Timeshift. There's a new tab in Settings Window to select the snapshot type as BTRFS or RSYNC.

  • Timeshift will default to BTRFS snapshots on supported systems (BTRFS filesystems with @ and @home subvolumes).
  • All snapshots created with Timeshift BTRFS are compatible with this version of Timeshift. Timeshift BTRFS will no longer be maintained.
  • Since Timeshift now includes all features from Timeshift BTRFS, installing Timeshift v17.1 will remove the package timeshift-btrfs if installed.
  • The total and unshared data size will be displayed in snapshot list for BTRFS snapshots. The "Unshared" column displays the disk space that can be recovered by deleting the snapshot.

Console Options

  • Option --backup has been replaced with option --check. This works exactly the same as before. Only the option is being renamed. Running timeshift --check will check if any snapshot needs to be created for the selected backup levels. It also performs housekeeping tasks such as deleting snapshots marked for deletion.
  • Option --backup-now has been replaced with option --create. This works exactly the same as before. Only the option is being renamed.
  • Option --tags {O,B,H,D,W,M} has been added to specify backup level while creating snapshots. Together with --create it can be used to set up custom cron jobs for creating snapshots at a specific time. For example, timeshift --create --tags W will create a new "weekly" snapshot. Users can add this command to the crontab to create weekly snapshots at 12:00 AM on Sundays (for example). Refer to the user manual for more details.
  • Options --btrfs and --rsync have been added to specify snapshot type. By default, the snapshot type selected in application settings will be used. The new options override the snapshot type selected by user in application settings.

Scheduled tasks

  • Scripts will be created in /etc/cron.*/ instead of adding entries to root user's crontab. This allows the user to create custom jobs for timeshift without creating conflicts with jobs created by Timeshift.
  • The cron service usually sends the output of scheduled tasks as an email to the current user. So if you have an email client configured on your system, you will receive hourly emails when the cron job runs. An option has been added to the Settings window to stop the cron daemon from sending emails, for tasks created by Timeshift.

Other Changes

  • /var/lib/docker will be excluded by default. This prevents recursive backups which can cause the disk to run out of space.
  • /timeshift-btrfs and /var/log/timeshift will be excluded by default.
  • Use expanded ButtonBox if GTK+ version >= 3.18

User Manual

The user manual has been updated with details for BTRFS snapshots. There's a new section on creating custom cron jobs for creating scheduled snapshots with Timeshift.

The updated user manual is available at the following link for people who have donated to this project: Download Timeshift User Manual
Please use the password that was sent to you in the last email for extracting the zip file.

If you have donated to this project in the past or contributed in any way (translations, troubleshooting, etc) but not received the user manual, please send me an email at teejeetech at gmail dot com. If you are a student or cannot afford to donate but still wish to get the user manual, please send me an email and I will send you a copy.

Preview: Polo File Manager

$

I've been working on a new dual-pane file manager for sometime after getting frustrated with the file management software on Linux. Most file managers like Nautilus/Gnome Files, Thunar, PCManFM and Nemo feel like copies of each other with some extra features between them. These are good enough for daily use but lack features which are pretty basic. I mean, this is 2017. Why can't I double-click and browse archives like zip and 7zip directly in the file manager - instead of being sent to another app like Ark and File-Roller? Why can't I simply browse my Dropbox and Google Drive accounts and get the files I need - instead of having to install the Dropbox client which ends up synching 10+ GBs of stuff I don't need to my local disk?

On Windows there are excellent dual-pane file managers available for power users such as Altap Salamander and Directory Opus. I don't see why something similar doesn't exist for Linux.

WelI, I have decided to take up this challenge and create a file manager that meets my requirements. Most of the basic functionality is already implemented and some of the new features are in-progress. It will be released once ready. I'm not sure how long that may take since I only get time for this on weekends.

Since this is a one-person project it may take some time before it is stable enough for a public release. I will be posting bi-weekly updates on new features and UI designs on Patreon.com for people who sign up as a sponsor.

Pathbar with navigation links

Clicking on the empty space in the pathbar switches to an editing mode. Moving the mouse away switches back to the breadcrumbs view. There are options to display buttons for the crumbs instead of links.

Disk manager dropdown

Displays all connected devices at a glance along with free space info, mount path, etc. Clicking on the item will mount the device if not mounted and open it in the current pane. Supports unlocking encrypted LUKS devices, etc.

Donations

You can support the development of this project by making a donation with Paypal or signing up as a sponsor on Patreon.com. The softwares on this site are open-source and free for all users and it will always remain that way. People who sign up as a sponsor on Patreon get access to regular bi-weekly updates on all upcoming software.

This is a preview of Polo file manager which is in development.

Beta builds will be available for testing next month for people who donate to this project. The final stable release will be available to all users. People who donate will get access to a few (extremely cool) extra features in the final release. Instead of using donation keys to unlock these extra features, these will be in the form of easter eggs. Either you can donate and I will tell you what these features are, or you will discover them accidentally one day and realize you missed out on something really neat. Your choice >:)

Note: If you have donated to any of my projects in the past and are interested in testing the beta release of Polo, please send me an email and I will add you to the mailing list.

Next development update will be on Feb 26 and the first beta build on March 5 (for donors and beta testers only).

Selene 16.2.1.md

Selene v16.2.1

What's New

AAC Encoders

FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder has been steadily improving and now produces audio with quality comparable to other AAC encoders. It was recently marked as stable and is no longer considered experimental. The quality of available AAC encoders now looks like this:
Fraunhofer FDK AAC (libfdk_aac) > Nero AAC > FFmpeg’s Native AAC encoder (aac) > libfaac > libvo_aacenc

Support has been added to Selene for encoding audio with FFmpeg’s AAC encoder and the Fraunhofer FDK AAC encoder (libfdk_aac). Using Nero AAC is not recommended anymore as development seems to have stopped. libfdk_aac gives better quality and can be easily installed from the Ubuntu repositories. Install the libfdk-aac0 package on your Ubuntu system to get the encoder.

sudo apt-get install libfdk-aac0

There’s a new option to change the AAC profile. It is recommended to keep this as ‘Auto’ which defaults to AAC-LC. AAC-LC is suitable for all general purpose encoding tasks while HE-AAC/HE-AACv2 is suitable for encoding at low bitrates (64 kbps and lower).

FFmpeg/Libav

If you have been following the FFmpeg/Libav scene since it started, then you must be aware that it’s about to get a little more confusing. Debian/Ubuntu has abandoned Libav and will be going back to FFmpeg for future Debian/Ubuntu releases.

This means the avconv tool created by Libav will no longer be available, and will be replaced by the ffmpeg command again. There’s a new option in the application settings window to specify the tool to use for encoding tasks. It’s recommended to set this to ffmpeg unless you are still using avconv.

Update your system with the following commands to switch over to ffmpeg:

sudo apt-get purge libav-tools
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg

In case you are planning to stick with Libav, keep in mind that Libav has not been keeping up with FFmpeg’s pace of development. FFmpeg now supports more codecs than Libav. FFmpeg merges most changes from Libav while Libav rarely merges changes from FFmpeg. FFmpeg fixes security issues as soon as they are reported while Libav is very slow to address security issues. The Libav development is going to slow down further after being abandoned by Debian/Ubuntu.

Version Numbers

Selene’s version number has been changed to match the scheme used by Ubuntu. For example, the current release is 16.2.1 which indicates:
16 -> 2016 (Year)
.2 -> Feb (Month)
.1 -> First update of the month

Installation

Ubuntu-based Distributions (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc)

Packages are available in the Launchpad PPA for supported Ubuntu releases. Run the following commands in a terminal window:

This is a preview of Polo file manager which is in development.

Beta builds will be available for testing next weekend for people who donate to this project. The final stable release will be available to all users. People who donate will get access to a few extra features in the final release.

If you have donated to any of my projects in the past and are interested in testing the beta release of Polo, please send me an email and I will add you to the mailing list.

Beta builds will be available next weekend (March 5).

Feature status

Completed: Toolbar, Statusbar, Layouts, Tabs, File Context Menu, File Menubar, File Operations, Overwrite Confirmation, Settings, Keyboard shortcuts

Pending (in order of priority): Drag & drop support, Icon View, Sidebar, Trash, Archive support, Cloud support, Remote file system support, Checksum calculations.

Completed this week

Overwrite Confirmation

In case of file conflicts, the list of files to be overwritten is displayed before the copy starts. This allows you to decide at one go if each file should be skipped or replaced. This is useful for long transfers where you can leave your desk and come back later, instead of coming back to find out that the transfer has stopped for an overwrite confirmation.

Clicking the Details button switches to an extended view where you can select and unselect each file individually.

Copy confirmation

A confirmation prompt will be displayed if you copy and paste items in the same directory. This prevents duplicate copies from getting created if you accidentally paste items in the wrong pane.

Statusbar Improvements

Statusbar now displays hidden file count, free space, disk usage and file system type.

Pathbar Improvements

Buttons were added to the right side of the panel for opening current directory in opposite pane and for swapping directories with opposite pane.

A tiny blue icon was added beside the current path which indicates if the pane is active. This icon is gray for an inactive pane. The items on the global toolbar act on the active pane. The information displayed in the global statusbar is also for the active pane.

File Indicators

Small icons have been added beside the file name to indicate if file is a symlink or read-only.

Toolbar Styles

New toolbar styles were added.

Icons only

Beta 2 of Polo File Manager is now available.

Beta builds are currently available only to a limited set of users who have donated to this project. The final stable release of Polo will be available to all users (April or May). People who donate will get access to a few extra features in the final release.

If you are interested in testing the beta release of Polo, please send me an email and I will add you to the beta mailing list.

Next beta will be available next weekend (March 18).

Feature status

Completed: Sessions, Media View, List View, Icon View, Tile View, Toolbar, Statusbar, Layouts, Tabs, File Context Menu, File Menubar, File Operations, Overwrite Confirmation, Settings, Keyboard shortcuts

Pending: Sidebar, Trash, Cloud storage support, Archive support, Remote and virtual filesystems, Checksum calculations, Drag & drop.

What's New

Sessions

Polo will remember the last session and reload the state on the next run. Open tabs, open directories, pane layouts and view modes will be restored. You can keep tabs open for directories that you normally work with, and Polo will restore them the next time you start the application.

Media View

A new view mode has been added for browsing photos and videos. If a folder is detected as containing photos and videos, Polo will switch to a 256x256 size icon-view. This view displays large-sized thumbnails that makes it easier to browse through items in the folder. Missing thumbnails will be generated automatically. You can exclude certain directories if you do not wish to switch to this view automatically.

Existing thumbails will be displayed from the system cache, and missing thumbnails will be generated for photos and videos. Since thumbnails generated by Polo are larger than ones created by other file managers, you can clear existing thumbnails in your system cache to force Polo to generate fresh images:

rm -rfv ~/.cache/thumbnails/{normal,large,fail}
rm -rfv ~/.thumbnails/{normal,large,fail}
mkdir -pv ~/.cache/thumbnails/{normal,large,fail}
mkdir -pv ~/.thumbnails/{normal,large,fail}

Speed Improvements

Application startup and new tab creation is now 8x faster than previous beta. Various optimizations have been done to speed up application startup, and initialization of tabs and views.

Distro Support

Issues have been fixed for Ubuntu 16.10 and 17.04 and tested on following - Ubuntu 16.04, Xubuntu 16.10, Xubuntu 17.01, Kubuntu 16.04, Manjaro 17 Xfce

Tab Rename

Tabs can now be renamed by right-clicking on the tab label and selecting "Edit Name" from the popup menu.

Icon Drawing Options

You can now select if emblems and thumbnails should be drawn/loaded for list view, icon view and tiled view.

Emblems and thumbnails affect the speed with which folder contents are loaded, so turning them off can speed up loading of directories which contain a large number of items (1000+). You will not notice any speed difference with smaller directories.

Emblems indicate if an item is a symlink or read-only but can also make the icon look congested, so you can now turn it off if you prefer a clean look for your icons.

Emblems and thumbnails are turned off by default for list view since the icons displayed in list are already very small (16px). You can turn it on if you wish to.

This is an update for Polo File Manager. There will be no betas available this weekend as some things are incomplete and I won't be having time to finish it. Beta 3 will be available next weekend (March 25).

Feature status

Completed: Sidebar, Sessions, Media View, List View, Icon View, Tile View, Toolbar, Statusbar, Layouts, Tabs, File Context Menu, File Menubar, File Operations, Overwrite Confirmation, Settings, Keyboard shortcuts

Pending: Sidebar, Trash, Cloud storage support, Archive support, Remote and virtual filesystems, Checksum calculations, Drag & drop.

What's New

Sidebar

There's an new sidebar which displays places, bookmarks and devices. The dark theme is optional and can be disabled from settings.

New Device Selection Dropdown

The device dropdown was redesigned using Gtk popover widget. Selecting a device will mount it (if unmounted) and display contents in the current pane. User will be prompted to unlock the device if encrypted.

New Bookmarks Dropdown

The bookmarks dropdown was also redesigned using Gtk popover widget. Bookmarks can be renamed and removed easily using the icons on the right side.

Panel Layout

The tab and panel layout was re-designed. Instead of multiple panels inside each tab, now there are multiple tabs in each panel. This is more convenient to use than the previous layout. Tabs can be re-arranged by dragging and dropping with the mouse. Tabs can also be detached and dropped on another panel.
