Moving to GitHub

Dropbox has stopped supporting direct linking of files from the Public folder. So the DEB and RUN files linked in my previous posts will no longer work. Instead of moving to another storage provider I'll be switching to GitHub.

The source code for my projects will now be available on both Launchpad as well as GitHub. Both repositories will be kept in sync.

GitHub provides hosting for binary files and a release page that lists the releases for a project. Links for downloads given below:

Selene Releases
Ukuu Releases
Aptik Releases
Conky Manager Releases
Indicator Diskman Releases
Battery Monitor Releases

Aptik v17.4

$

Aptik v17.4 is now available.

What's New

Improved App Settings

  • Application settings window now displays a simplified list of items instead of listing the config directories in your home folder. Multiple directories created by an application will be listed as a single item.
  • User dropdown now displays an option for "All Users". This displays a combined list of applications from all user home directories. Clicking the "Backup" button will create separate backups for each user on the system.
  • Selected items will be remembered by Aptik and pre-selected when you open the application again. This saves time if you backup the same applications every time.
  • This version uses a new folder layout to create backups for application settings. Backups created with previous versions of Aptik are not compatible with this version.

Misc

  • Fixed: The application would crash sometimes while downloading packages
  • Fixed: Clicking links in About and Donate windows did not work with Chrome as the browser was launched as root user. The browser will now be launched as a normal user.
  • Added Swedish translation by Åke Engelbrektson
  • Various minor issues were fixed.

Installation

Ubuntu-based Distributions (Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc)

Packages are available in the Launchpad PPA for supported Ubuntu releases. Run the following commands in a terminal window:

sudo apt-add-repository -y ppa:teejee2008/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install aptik

For older Ubuntu releases which have reached end-of-life, DEB and RUN files can be downloaded from the Releases page.

Debian

DEB and RUN files can be downloaded from the Releases page.

Other Linux Distributions

This application is meant to be used only on Ubuntu-based distributions. It depends on apt and other debian-specific tools to backup and restore packages. There are currently no plans to add support for other package managers and distributions.

Donate

If you find this application useful and wish to say thanks, you can make a donation via Paypal to show your support. You could also sign up as a sponsor on Patreon.com. People who donate get access to beta releases of new applications during the development stage, and extra features in the final release.

Polo Beta 4

Beta 4 build of Polo File Manager is now available.

Beta releases are currently available only to a limited set of users who have donated to this project. The final stable release of Polo will be available to all users (in June). People who donate will get access to a few extra features in the final release.

Beta 5 will be available on April 30. You can track changes on the milestones page.

Pending: Trash, Archive support, Cloud storage support, Remote and virtual filesystems, Checksum calculations, Drag & drop.

What's New

File View Changes

  • Views will update automatically when directory contents change. There is no need to manually refresh the view using toolbar button or F5 key.
  • Previously, the view would default to the user's home directory when a device was unmounted, or if the path was not found while restoring the last session. This is inconvenient as the user has to navigate to the path again after connecting the device. Unmounting a device will now display "Device was unmounted" in the view instead of switching to user's home directory. While restoring the last session, an empty view will be displayed with message "Path not found".

First-Run Wizard

  • A wizard-style dialog was added to select the default layout on the first run of the application. Users can click one of the images to set the default layout. More pages will be added later for selecting other defaults.

Device Dropdown

  • [Fixed] Loop devices created by snap packages will not be displayed
  • [Fixed] Swap volumes will not be displayed
  • Device list in sidebar will refresh automatically when devices are connected, disconnected, mounted or unmounted
  • Device dropdown was updated to display the volume size and mount path

Speed Improvements

  • Folders will take less time to open after the first time, as some data will be cached for future use. This gives a 10% to 60% improvement in speed when folders are re-opened (depending on the number of items and images in folder).
  • More speed improvements are planned for Beta 5

Media bar changes

In previous version the view would switch automatically to Media View if the folder contained images or video. User had to exit the view manually or select the "Ignore" option. This is inconvenient since the view would change suddenly on entering such folders even if user wished to stay in the selected view (List, Icon, or Tiled).

Now the media bar will prompt user to switch to Media View without switching to it automatically.

User can select Yes to switch to Media View, or No to ignore the prompt. Selection will be remembered for future sessions and prompt will not appear for same folder again.

To reset the saved decision, simply change the view manually from the toolbar and the prompt will appear again when you open the folder.

Hide Files & Folders

Files and folders can now be hidden by selecting "Hide" or "Unhide" from the right-click menu. This adds an entry to the .hidden file in the parent directory.

Normally, only files starting with dot "." are treated as hidden files. Using this option allows files to be hidden without changing the name.

Files will remain hidden in all file managers that support .hidden files (Nemo, Nautilus, etc).

Other changes

  • Added keyboard shortcuts and menubar items for Back (Alt+Left), Forward (Alt+Right) and Up (Alt+Up)

  • Added keyboard shortcuts and menubar items for Open Location (Ctrl+L)

  • (Delete) will send files to trash and (Shift+Delete) will delete files permanently. This was mapped in opposite order in previous versions.

  • Added type-ahead selection for list view (files and folders can be selected by typing on keyboard).

  • [Fixed] Thumbnailer: Random crash on browsing directories with images

  • [Fixed] Thumbnailer: Do not generate thumbnails for image files smaller than 128px, load file directly instead.

  • [Fixed] Thumbnailer: Do not upscale thumbnails for images which are smaller then requested size.

  • [Fixed] Tree browsing was broken. Subfolders were not populated correctly when node was expanded.

  • [Fixed] Only first file was trashed on trashing multiple files

Polo Beta 5 Preview

Beta 5 will be delayed by another week (May 7th). Here's a preview of new features.

What's New

Trash Support

  • You can now browse, delete and restore items in your trash.

  • Each user can see the items in their local trash folder plus trash folders on all mounted devices that they have access to.
  • Size of files in trash will be displayed in the sidebar and dropdown. So you will always be aware of how much data you have in trash.

  • Right-click menu for trashed items have an option to open the original path in a new tab, and options for copying trashed items to other locations.

Archive Support

  • Support was added for browsing, extracting and creating archives. This is powered by the p7zip utility which is available on most Linux distributions.

  • Archives can be browsed as normal folders with a double-click. Browsing nested archives (archives inside archives) is also supported.

  • You will be prompted for password when you try to open an encrypted archive with encrypted headers (encrypted file list). Encrypted archives with non-encrypted headers can be browsed normally. Password will be required only for extraction.

  • Once you enter password for an archive, it will be remembered for current session.

  • Extraction progress is similiar to the 7zip application on Windows :-). It shows detailed progress information and can also be paused and resumed.

Feature status

Pending: Drag & drop, Cloud storage support, Remote and virtual filesystems, Checksum calculations.

Project Status & Milestones

What's New

Performance Improvements

  • Loading folders is now super-quick. In previous versions there was a noticeable lag while opening folders. This has been fixed.
  • Visiting a folder that was visited previously will load the view instantly, as it is loaded from a cache. The cache updates automatically when folder contents change.

Calculate Directory Sizes

  • Directory sizes can be calculated using shortcut CTRL+E or by selecting the option from Menubar -> Tools.

Default File Manager & Single Window Mode

  • There's a new option to select the default file manager on your system. You can select Polo from the dropdown or any other file manager that you prefer.

  • Opening the folders on your desktop should open the folder in the selected file manager, but some desktops (like Unity) will open the folder in whichever file manager is default for that desktop (Nautilus for Unity and Gnome). Sadly, this is difficult to work-around, and depends on which desktop you are using.

  • If the single-window mode is selected, then opening new folders with Polo will open the folder in an existing window instead of creating a new window each time. The path will be opened in a new tab, and the window will be brought to the front and focussed.

  • The "Open in New Tab" option was changed so that an already-open tab will be focussed instead of creating a new one.

ListView Sorting

  • Some issues were fixed with list view sorting. Directories will be sorted before files.
  • An arrow will be displayed in column header to indicate the sorting direction. The arrow points in the direction of increasing values.

Creating Archives

  • You can create archives by selecting items and clicking "Compress" from the right-click menu.

  • Clicking the tiny gear icons beside Level and Encrypt brings up some advanced options.

  • Compression progress is displayed in-line at the botton of the active pane. The progressbar displays the dynamic compression ratio (darker bar) while the archive is being copmpressed :)

External Tools

  • There's a new window which displays the external utilities that Polo depends on, and whether they are installed on the system. You can bring up this window from Menubar -> Tools -> External Tools.

  • You need to have p7zip installed on your system for archive support to work. The version that is available in Ubuntu 16.04 is v9.20 which was released in 2010. Most Linux distros have this version in their repos. Polo will work with this older version, but you may face some issues with encrypted archives. You can check your version with the following command:

    7z | grep "Version"

Any version higher than v9.20 is recommended.

  • You can download a newer version for Ubuntu from below links. These packages are from Ubuntu 16.10 Yaketty.

You can paste the following commands in a terminal window to download and install the packages automatically.

Installer

  • The installer had some issues with non-Ubuntu distributions like ArchLinux, Manjaro, etc. These have been fixed.

  • Installer can be executed with following command:

    sudo sh polo*amd64.run

Bugfixes

  • Fixed: Toggles for expanding and collapsing sections in sidebar was not working

  • Fixed: Closing the second-last tab in a pane would close that tab but add a new tab again

  • Various other issues were fixed

A sub-menu was added for sorting items in all view modes (sorting was not supported for Icon View and Tile View in previous beta).

Document Templates

  • Support was added for document templates in user's Templates folder (usually $HOME/Templates). Templates will be listed in the New submenu and can be used for creating new documents.
  • System-wide templates installed in /usr/share/templates are also supported.

Other Changes

  • [Fixed] Mount ISO option in the right-click menu did nothing when clicked
  • [Fixed] Restoring a session would sometimes break the pane layout. Switching from single to multiple panes would display an empty area in place of the extra pane that should have been displayed.
  • [Fixed] Device relationships were not mapped correctly. Partitions would sometimes be displayed under a disk it did not belong to.
  • [Fixed] Cancel button in File Conflicts window would reshow the window again if clicked
  • [Fixed] Files containing localized characters could not be opened as the file path was not passed correctly to the mimetype handler
  • Optional confirmation prompts were added for trash and delete actions.
  • Collapsed and expanded state of sections in sidebar will be saved while saving session.
  • The hidden items count in statusbar can be clicked to display all hidden files.
  • Various other issues were fixed.

What's New

Terminal Panels

  • Each tab now has an embedded terminal that can be toggled using the F4 key or using the icon in statusbar.
  • The terminal is powered by the Fish shell with features such as auto-suggestions, color themes, man page completions, etc.
  • Please be aware that fish is NOT bash. Fish has its own scripting syntax that differs from bash. Read the fish documentation for reference, or type bash in the terminal to start a bash session when you need it :-)
  • There's an option in the right-click menu to chroot into a Linux system installed on another partition. Network and display sharing are enabled by default, so it is possible to connect to the internet and start GUI applications in the chrooted terminal :-). Type exit when you are done to exit the session cleanly.
  • You can maximize the terminal using Maximize in the right-click menu. This will hide the file view and the entire tab becomes a "terminal tab". You can use this tab as a terminal and other tabs for browsing folders. Use the Unmaximize option to display the file view again.
  • Working directory for the terminal is initialized to the current folder that is open in the tab. You can cd into other folders as required. Use the Change directory option to cd to the folder that is open in the folder view.

Boot ISO

You can now boot ISO files in a QEMU/KVM virtual machine using the ISO> Boot option in right-click menu.

QEMU/KVM Support

Polo now provides options to create and manage virtual machines with QEMU/KVM.

The qemu-kvm package must be installed on your system for these features to work.

To create a new virtual machine using QEMU/KVM:

  1. Right-click on an empty folder and use the Create Disk option to create a new virtual hard disk.
  2. Right-click on the disk file and select Install from ISO. You will be prompted to select a bootable ISO file for a Linux distro or Windows setup disk. Select the ISO file to start the VM and install the OS on the virtual disk. Exit the VM after installation is complete.
  3. Right-click on the disk file again and select Boot Disk to use the installed system.

Use [ CTRL + ALT ] to grab and release the mouse inside the VM window.

Use [ CTRL + ALT + F ] to toggle fullscreen mode inside the VM window.

Following disk formats are supported - QCOW2, VDI, VMDK, VHD, IMG.

CPU, RAM and other resources to be allocated for the VM can be configured from Settings> Advanced.

  • If you do not wish to use these features, uncheck the Show KVM in context menu checkbox. This will remove the KVM options from the right-click menu.

Polo Beta 8 Preview

This is a preview of Polo Beta 8. It will be available by end of June.

What's New

PDF Actions

Following actions were added to the right-click menu of PDF files:

  • Split - Splits the PDF file by page
  • Merge - Merge selected PDF files into one file by sorting on the file name
  • Add Password - Protect the PDF file by setting a password

  • Remove Password - Remove the password from a protected PDF file

  • Reduce File Size - Reduces the PDF file size by reducing the resolution. This works very well and can reduce the size of scanned documents to about 20% of the original size without any noticeable loss of quality. You can use the Optimize submenu if you need more options for reducing size.

  • Uncompress - Creates an uncompressed PDF file

  • Remove Colors - Creates a black and white PDF file

  • Rotate - Flip the pages upside down or rotate it left or right.

  • Optimize - Creates PDFs optimized for screen, ebook, printing, etc.

  • These options are powered by pdftk, ghostscript and other tools.

  • All actions create a new file in the current folder. Original file will not be modified.

  • The Split and Merge options can be combined to add, remove and re-arrange pages in a PDF document.

    • First Split the document you wish to modify. You will get one file for each page.
    • Delete pages by deleting files
    • Re-arrange pages by renaming files in the required order
    • Rotate any pages (if needed) using the Rotate submenu
    • Finally select the files and use the Merge option to create a new PDF document

KVM Improvements

Virtual disk images can now be converted to other formats using the options in right-click menu.

Following conversions are supported:

  • RAW, QCOW2 >> VMDK, VDI, VHD, RAW, QCOW2
  • RAW, QCOW2, VMDK, VDI, VHD, DMG, NBD, IMG, QED, VFAT >> RAW, QCOW2

A CPU Limit option was added to Settings window. Keep this at 90% or below to prevent the guest VM from hogging the CPU on host system.

Write ISO to USB Device

Polo can now write ISO images to USB drives. Useful for creating bootable pen drives. The write operation is fast and displays detailed progress info with estimated time remaining.

Progress panel:

  • The ISO file will be written directly to the selected device. This is the same method used by tools like Etcher, Gnome Disk Utility, etc
  • The ISO file must be a hybrid ISO which can be written to both CD/DVD and USB drives. Almost all Linux distributions provide hybrid ISOs since USB drives are popular and CD/DVDs are becoming obsolete, but in some cases you may encounter non-hybrid ISOs as well. These will fail to boot if written directly and must be written using tools like UNetbootin, Rufus, etc. These tools unpack the contents of the ISO to the pen drive and then install a bootloader on it.

Other Changes

  • [Fixed] Renamed items disappear when folder is reloaded
  • [Fixed] Crash on changing icon size from Settings window
  • Fedora: The installer will now offer to install required dependencies when you run it
  • Various other issues were fixed

All releases of Polo will now be publicly available for download. The closed beta-testing period is now over. The application is now stable enough for daily use (IMO), though some features are still missing like drag and drop, cloud storage, etc. These will be added in future updates.

Donation features have been moved to a separate package 'polo-donation-plugins'. This will be shared by email with users who have donated to this project or contributed in other ways such as translations, code changes, etc. You can make a one-time donation for $10 or more via PalPal to get access to all donation features.

Tab Locking

Tabs can now be locked to a path by right-clicking the tab and selecting Lock Path from the context menu.

The tab will display a lock icon to indicate that it is locked. You can navigate to any folder under the locked path, but you cannot navigate to a location outside the path. Trying to navigate outside will open the new path in a new tab.

Support for Mounting & Browsing SquashFS, IMG Files

Squashfs and IMG images can be mounted using the Disk Image > Mount option in right-click menu. Mounted file will show up as a loop device in device manager.

Other Changes

  • Close selection bar on pressing Esc key
  • Display directory entry size by default instead of item count
  • Added option in Settings to query subfolders
  • Fixed: Refresh remote folder after file operation completes
  • Fixed: Inverted mouse cursor was displayed for some cursor themes on KDE
  • Fixed: Thumbnail generation for GIF files
  • Fixed: Display context menu for devices in sidebar. Display device name in header.
  • Fixed: It was not possible to mount or browse LUKS-encrypted devices where the entire disk is encrypted instead of just partitions.
  • Fixed: Success message was displayed on unmounting a device even if the device could not be unmounted.
  • Fixed: Trash: Display columns for Trashed Date and Original Location
  • Removed option to detach and drop tabs between panes was removed. Detached tabs have too many weird issues and can make the app crash in some scenarios. This feature will be enabled again once all issues are fixed.
