Project Status & Milestones

What's New

Performance Improvements

  • Loading folders is now super-quick. In previous versions there was a noticeable lag while opening folders. This has been fixed.
  • Visiting a folder that was visited previously will load the view instantly, as it is loaded from a cache. The cache updates automatically when folder contents change.

Calculate Directory Sizes

  • Directory sizes can be calculated using shortcut CTRL+E or by selecting the option from Menubar -> Tools.

Default File Manager & Single Window Mode

  • There's a new option to select the default file manager on your system. You can select Polo from the dropdown or any other file manager that you prefer.

  • Opening the folders on your desktop should open the folder in the selected file manager, but some desktops (like Unity) will open the folder in whichever file manager is default for that desktop (Nautilus for Unity and Gnome). Sadly, this is difficult to work-around, and depends on which desktop you are using.

  • If the single-window mode is selected, then opening new folders with Polo will open the folder in an existing window instead of creating a new window each time. The path will be opened in a new tab, and the window will be brought to the front and focussed.

  • The "Open in New Tab" option was changed so that an already-open tab will be focussed instead of creating a new one.

ListView Sorting

  • Some issues were fixed with list view sorting. Directories will be sorted before files.
  • An arrow will be displayed in column header to indicate the sorting direction. The arrow points in the direction of increasing values.

Creating Archives

  • You can create archives by selecting items and clicking "Compress" from the right-click menu.

  • Clicking the tiny gear icons beside Level and Encrypt brings up some advanced options.

  • Compression progress is displayed in-line at the botton of the active pane. The progressbar displays the dynamic compression ratio (darker bar) while the archive is being copmpressed :)

External Tools

  • There's a new window which displays the external utilities that Polo depends on, and whether they are installed on the system. You can bring up this window from Menubar -> Tools -> External Tools.

  • You need to have p7zip installed on your system for archive support to work. The version that is available in Ubuntu 16.04 is v9.20 which was released in 2010. Most Linux distros have this version in their repos. Polo will work with this older version, but you may face some issues with encrypted archives. You can check your version with the following command:

    7z | grep "Version"

Any version higher than v9.20 is recommended.

  • You can download a newer version for Ubuntu from below links. These packages are from Ubuntu 16.10 Yaketty.

You can paste the following commands in a terminal window to download and install the packages automatically.

Installer

  • The installer had some issues with non-Ubuntu distributions like ArchLinux, Manjaro, etc. These have been fixed.

  • Installer can be executed with following command:

    sudo sh polo*amd64.run

Bugfixes

  • Fixed: Toggles for expanding and collapsing sections in sidebar was not working

  • Fixed: Closing the second-last tab in a pane would close that tab but add a new tab again

  • Various other issues were fixed
